Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.
