After weeks of suspense, schemes and backstabbing, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a thrilling end
Spoiler alert - This article discloses details from The Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, viewers witnessed murders, betrayals, intense glares, and an unforgettable incident that pierced the overwhelming suspense.
Yet on Thursday night, the final winner of the first celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of nineteen participants, just a handful were left standing: Deceivers and faithfuls facing off for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the remaining contestants.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr was crowned the champion, in a surprising result that broke the internet and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he exclaimed, revealing to the other players that he'd always been one of the deceivers. "I'm an awful human being."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "Everything's fine."
Online platforms quickly erupted with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented one user.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," stated another, while a third called it "the television highlight of the year."
The organization he selected, a cancer charity, will receive all the prize money, with the total amount reaching ÂŁ87,500.
The comedian's evolution from comic relief to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
But his win still left the nation in shock, as noted by entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, of all people, executing a masterclass in deceit felt about as likely as him keeping composure through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up why no one had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have come down to breakfast in traitor attire and I still wouldn't have thought he was a traitor. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"Most people didn't target him because how does one eliminate a person so charming?" questioned a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his experience with the program.
"I want to do it again... I don't think it would work again!"
The final installment was lengthened to over an hour on the network. It had a different start than typical episodes, as every celebrity were aware who would appear at the morning gathering.
There was particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque music, as the episode revisited some moments from every remaining player's time in the castle.
True to form, Alan Carr provided unforgettable quotes.
"Let's face it, I began this game as something of an anxious mess. I've betrayed some really good friends under the bus, I've murdered national treasures in plain sight. I'm clearly a better liar and player than I thought."
At the same time, a different player commented that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than playing for England", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning in the episode, several players seemed to be attempting to become the fashion standout of the castle, replacing an earlier departed style leader.
The winner appeared at breakfast looking like a vintage television personality in patterned burgundy attire, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
But he was out-jacketted by another contestant's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the challenge, with the final players getting on board a locomotive called - naturally - The Traitors Express.
This task saw them ripping up images of eliminated players. Have sympathy for a player who was hit in the head multiple times by the lid of a heavy wooden box.
Before long, the moment arrived for the elimination discussion.
The deceivers did a pinky promise in advance, vowing to support each other. "We've progressed significantly, I'm not going to betray him," stated a player, while their partner simply laughed.
And one did stick to his promise. But, having slipped under the radar for most of the game, their partner still got the most votes.
The remaining traitor appeared he was in significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Being alone, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Online platforms and viewers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against that player to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," said an observer.
"Your legacy will remain in Traitors history," posted a different viewer.
However, there remained little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Soon, the game reached the endgame - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players stood over the fire pit. And the alliance broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was eliminated in dramatic fashion - after a shock vote from their partner, who betrayed them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back at the final moment like that," said the ousted contestant. Subsequently, it was revealed that if they ever communicate, the betrayed player refers to the other by a betrayer's name.
Finally, only three contestants were still competing: the final trio.
A contestant, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the game. So did another, and it all came down to the final participant, who made the identical choice - resulting in the deceiver emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the scene where the other players consoled the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be in the running for outstanding scene at next year's awards," they said.
Fortunately, the winner soon recovered from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate his victory.
"Such an emotional journey. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and now I stand the champion," the winner said.
He also made light of that infamous murder - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the host in the concluding moments and making contact.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, scheming and the occasional surprising incidents may seem like a bizarre fantasy. Yet it actually occur. And we will miss it.
