Jude Bellingham Needs to Cut Out the Nonsense to Earn a Star Position In Manager Thomas Tuchel.
For Bellingham to hopes to force his way back into England’s top squad, he would be wise to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. His response upon realizing that the substitute board was going up after an evening of inconsistency in Tirana fell short of expectations.
"I don’t want to overstate it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the players who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Substitutions happen and you have to accept it as a player."
The midfielder must understand. There was no need for an outburst. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it the national team leading by two in a meaningless qualifier, the game had six minutes to go and he, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for fouling the Albanian striker. It was not a debatable decision. In fact it would have been unwise for the manager to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that there was a chance Bellingham would be suspended of the opening game of the World Cup by getting a second caution.
Shifting Focus on Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the young midfielder's annoyance when he clocked that he would be substituted for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and while he accepted the coach's hand after making his way to the sideline it was obvious that Tuchel did not appreciate it.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He praised Marcus Rashford for providing the assist for the captain to head in his second of the night, but the rest was counterproductive. It's not like arguing was going to alter the decision. The German has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the value of behaving correctly.
Facing Examination
He, left out of the team last month, is being watched carefully since coming back to the team recently. In effect he was being assessed and he hasn't helped his case with his response to being taken off as the side wrapped up a flawless qualification run by overcoming a feisty challenge from their opponents.
Tactics and Formation
As a result opinions are divided on how the team perform optimally including Bellingham. The evidence here was open to interpretation. There was experimentation from the manager in the beginning. He has provided the squad structure and clarity lately, using a No 6, a No 8, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. The young defender was made his England debut, Wharton was in the starting lineup at this level and the role of Stones as an auxiliary midfielder meant there was faint echo to City's historic treble-winning side.
Inconsistent Display
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate in the latter period but often looked too desperate to impress. There were a lot of poorly executed passes. A pointless clash with an Albania midfielder early on. England's play was messy for much of the second half. One Albania chance came after Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking came after he was dispossessed from Broja and brought down the attacker.
Substitutes Decide
Ultimately the bench quality was decisive. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who seemed more naturally fitted to the spot in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka provided a corner kick for Kane to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that set pieces will play a key role in the upcoming tournament.
Bridge Still Stands
Nevertheless, the focus was on Bellingham. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked due to the fuss of the Rogers substitution. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel came over to his side and guided the Real Madrid midfielder towards the away supporters. The bond between them remains intact. Tuchel hasn't decided to give up on Bellingham yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to grant him a starring role is still uncertain.
