Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Victories After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match since player Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
