Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the game plans and player rankings required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Personal talent matters but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He observed the national side book their place at the tournament in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach discuss appreciating the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude possesses the edge. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must help him and create an environment where he can channel his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of coaching. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a specific system, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to develop the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to start against Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an more effective one.
